Author: Jaagup Sepp – For the last 8 years, I’ve been a ‘climate refugee,’ spending my Estonian winters in Asia.

Thailand is one of my favorite countries in the world. If it weren’t so far from Europe – and if it weren’t sometimes so humidly hot – I would have probably considered moving there permanently long ago. Over the last decade, I have spent a large part of my Estonian winters traveling around Asia, and Thailand is the place I keep returning to again and again.

There’s something about this country that just draws you in: an endlessly diverse culture, white beaches with crystal-clear water, nature with waterfalls hidden in the jungle, exotic wildlife, and, of course, the wonderful cuisine that makes every taste bud dance. One day, Thailand can be a relaxing beach holiday under the palm trees, and the next, an adventure climbing cliffs or hiking in the jungle. It is at once chaotic and peaceful, colorful and meditative, exciting and safe.

Over the years, I have spent months in Thailand – sometimes moving every few days, other times staying in one place for weeks. I’ve ridden a motorcycle through jungles, kayaked in lagoons, woken up at dawn to the sound of temple bells, and sat on the beach at night, watching a starry sky that seems endless.

That’s why it’s no surprise that there is a huge amount to do in Thailand – especially in February, when the weather is perfect for traveling. In my opinion, February is one of the best months to be in Thailand: there is little rain, the sea is calm, and the air is pleasantly warm. It’s a month when the beaches have turquoise water, the jungles are lush and green, and the cities have a pleasant rhythm – not too hot, not too crowded.

In this article, I will share my 10 best recommendations for where to go in Thailand in February, based on personal experience and years of travel. I have tried to choose places that give a truly diverse picture of Thailand – from beaches and islands to nature and culture. For each destination, I have also added hotel recommendations that I think are best suited for a February trip.

Why is February ideal for visiting Thailand?

If you ask me when to go to Thailand, I usually answer: December–March. But if I had to choose one month, it would often be February.

  • First – the weather. In February, most of Thailand is in its dry season. The sun shines, the sky is blue, and rain is the exception rather than the rule. The sea on the Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) is usually calm, which makes boat trips and snorkeling particularly enjoyable.
  • Second – the temperature. The days are warm, but not suffocatingly hot. The evenings are pleasantly mild, which means you can stay out late, enjoy street food, or just walk on the beach without dripping with sweat.
  • Third – nature. The Khao Sok jungle is green, the mountains around Chiang Mai are clear, and the water of the Andaman islands is transparent. This is the time when Thailand shows itself from its most photogenic side.
  • Of course, you have to take into account that February is the high season – prices are higher and popular places are more crowded. But my experience says that if you choose wisely and book early, the weather and the general vibe more than make up for it.

If you are looking for a combination of sun, nature, and culture, then Thailand in February is one of the surest bets in Asia.

10 best places to go in Thailand in February

1) Phuket – The Best Overall Beach Destination in February

Phuket is the place I often end up when I start my Thai climate refugee journey. It’s not always my favorite place, but it is undoubtedly the most versatile and convenient.

In February, the Andaman Sea is usually calm and the water is clear. I remember the first time I went to the Phi Phi Islands in February – the sea was like glass, the boat glided over the turquoise water, and the cliffs rose majestically straight from the sea.

What I like about Phuket is that you can do everything: stay in a luxury resort, ride a scooter along the coast, discover the colorful streets of Old Town, or go diving for a day. At the same time, there is a lot of tourism, so if you are looking for complete peace, it is not ideal – but for a first-time traveler, it is an excellent choice.

My favorite activities in Phuket in February:

  • An early morning walk on Patong Beach before the tourists wake up
  • A day trip to the Phi Phi Islands (best visibility for snorkeling)
  • Sunset at Promthep Cape – one of Thailand’s most iconic views
  • Phuket Old Town’s street art and local cafes

2) Krabi – A Paradise of Nature and Cliffs

Krabi holds a special place in my heart. The first time I arrived at Railay Beach, I felt like I had entered another world – high limestone cliffs, emerald green water, and the feeling of being almost cut off from the rest of civilization.

In February, Krabi is ideal: the sea is calm, island hopping is great, and the air is clear. I have spent weeks there, waking up in the morning to the sound of kayaking and ending the day with a sunset against the backdrop of the cliffs.

Krabi is especially suitable for those who love nature, hiking, and active holidays. Railay is a rock climber’s paradise, and Ao Nang is a good base for boat trips.

What I always do in Krabi:

  • A day at Railay Beach, peaceful in the morning, magical in the evening
  • Hong Islands boat trip – incredibly beautiful lagoons
  • Kayaking in the mangroves

Recommended hotels in Krabi:

  • Rayavadee – one of Thailand’s most iconic luxury resorts
  • Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi – private and tropical
  • Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort – comfortable and family-friendly
  • Railay Princess Resort & Spa – a good mid-range choice

3) Koh Lanta – The Peace You Won’t Find in Phuket

If Phuket is my “safe” start, then Koh Lanta is where my soul truly calms down. It’s an island where time seems to slow down, the beaches have more space, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

In February, Koh Lanta is perfect: the sea is smooth, the sunsets are golden, and the tourist crowds are much smaller than in Phuket. I have spent days there, riding a scooter along the coast, stopping at random beach bars, and watching the sun sink below the horizon.

Koh Lanta is especially suitable for couples, those looking for a longer holiday, and those who don’t want constant hustle and bustle.

My Koh Lanta rituals:

  • A walk on Long Beach at sunset
  • Dinner on the beach with your toes in the sand
  • Snorkeling on the nearby small islands

Recommended hotels on Koh Lanta:

  • Pimalai Resort & Spa – luxury between the jungle and the sea
  • Layana Resort & Spa – adults-only tranquility
  • Costa Lanta – a very good budget choice

4) Koh Phi Phi – Postcard-Perfect Beauty

Koh Phi Phi is one of those places that makes you understand why Thailand is so famous. In February, the water is crystal clear and the visibility is excellent.

I remember the first time I got near Maya Bay by boat – the water was so transparent it seemed like we were floating in the air. Although the island is touristy, it is possible to find quieter coves, especially if you go early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

What I recommend on Phi Phi:

  • Snorkeling early in the morning, before the boat crowds
  • A hike to the viewpoint for sunset
  • A boat trip around the island

Recommended hotels on Koh Phi Phi:

  • SAii Phi Phi Island Village – the best luxury choice on the island
  • Zeavola Resort – private and romantic
  • Phi Phi The Beach Resort – a more affordable alternative

5) Koh Lipe – The “Maldives of Thailand”

Koh Lipe is a small island, but for me, it’s one of the most magical places in Thailand. In February, the water is so clear you can see the fish even without a mask.

There is a special vibe there – fewer cars, more walking, more silence. In the evenings, people gather on the beach to watch the sunset, and the days pass slowly.

My favorites on Koh Lipe:

  • Snorkeling straight from the beach
  • Sunset on Pattaya Beach
  • Walks to the other side of the island

Recommended hotels on Koh Lipe:

  • Sita Beach Resort – best location on Sunrise Beach
  • Akira Lipe Resort – modern and stylish
  • Idyllic Concept Resort – romantic boutique style

6) Koh Samui – A Safe Choice in February

While the Andaman side can sometimes be windy, Koh Samui and the Gulf of Thailand islands are usually very good in February. I have headed there several times when there have been waves in Phuket.

Samui is larger, more comfortable, and more developed than many other islands. It has excellent spas, good restaurants, and beautiful beaches.

My Koh Samui favorites:

  • A morning swim at Chaweng Beach
  • A visit to the Big Buddha at sunrise
  • A day spa experience

Recommended hotels on Koh Samui:

  • Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui – top-notch
  • Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui – world-class
  • Anantara Lawana Koh Samui – romantic and peaceful

7) Koh Tao – The Best Place for Diving in February

For me, Koh Tao is the best place in Thailand for diving. In February, the water is clear, visibility is good, and marine life is abundant.

I have spent weeks there, taking diving courses and exploring the underwater world. Even if you don’t dive, the snorkeling is fantastic.

What to do on Koh Tao:

  • A diving course
  • Snorkeling in Shark Bay
  • A hike to a viewpoint

Recommended hotels on Koh Tao:

  • Jamahkiri Resort & Spa – great views
  • Koh Tao Coral Grand Resort – a good mid-range choice

8) Bangkok – Culture, Food, and a City Break

Bangkok is a city you either love or hate – I love it. It’s more pleasant to be there in February because the heat is not so intense.

I like to start the day with a visit to the temples, eat street food, and end the evening in a rooftop bar, watching the city sparkle.

My Bangkok must-dos:

  • The Grand Palace and Wat Pho
  • A river cruise on the Chao Phraya
  • Chatuchak Market
  • A rooftop bar at sunset

Recommended hotels in Bangkok:

  • Mandarin Oriental Bangkok – legendary
  • Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River – contemporary luxury
  • Shangri-La Bangkok – great for families
  • Eastin Grand Phayathai – comfortable and affordable
  • The Okura Prestige Bangkok – stylish and highly rated

9) Chiang Mai – kultuur ja loodus veebruaris

Chiang Mai on minu jaoks Tai hingeline pool. Veebruaris on seal jahedam, eriti õhtuti, mis teeb linna väga mõnusaks.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival toob tänavatele värvid ja lõhnad ning mägedes on suurepärased matkarajad.

Mida ma Chiang Mais teen:

  • Doi Suthep tempel päikesetõusul
  • Matk džunglis
  • Kohalikud turud ja kohvikud

Soovitatud hotellid Chiang Mais:

  • Anantara Chiang Mai Resort – elegantne jõekalda kuurort
  • U Chiang Mai Hotel – boutique-õhkkond
  • RatiLanna Riverside Spa Resort – rahulik ja luksuslik
  • Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel – kindel kvaliteet

Mida teha Khao Sokis:

  • Paadireis Cheow Lani järvel
  • Džunglimatkad
  • Ööbimine ujuvas majakeses

Soovitatud hotellid Khao Sokis:

  • Our Jungle House – autentne ja soodne
  • Praktilised näpunäited veebruariks Tais

    • Broneeri varakult – veebruar on kõrghooaeg
    • Vali õiged saared: Phuket/Krabi (Andamani pool) või Koh Samui/Koh Tao (Tai laht)
    • Paki kergelt: suveriided, päikesekreem, müts
    • Liikumine saarte vahel: lennud on kiiremad, praamid odavamad

    KKK – korduma kippuvad küsimused

Kas veebruar on hea aeg Tais reisimiseks?
Jah – see on üks parimaid kuid tänu kuivale ja päikeselisele ilmale.

    Kas veebruaris on Tais kallis?
